Firebird needed a soft place to land. Thanks to you, Fast Friends was there when he needed us most.

Firebird first came to Fast Friends in summer of 2020, when Greyhound racing was winding down in Florida. He was a stunning dog with a beautiful coat, soulful eyes, and gentle personality. Not surprisingly, he was adopted quickly and was home for the holidays.

We didn’t hear from Firebird’s adopters until a few months ago. He had been part of their family for more than four years, but he needed to be rehomed. Their request was urgent, so we got to work. No matter how much time passes after they leave us, we’ll move mountains to help a Fast Friends dog in need.

Firebird was a timid boy when he was with us initially, so we worried that coming to the kennel after so long in a home would be difficult for him. One of our adopters had just lost their Greyhound and we reached out, knowing it might be too soon but also knowing what a great match it would be. They said yes, and just days after coming back to us, Firebird was in his new home. Far from being stressed, he settled right in and blossomed. When he came to the summer Reunion, we couldn’t believe the change — he was a completely different dog, confident and looking for attention from everyone.

Firebird’s transformation is exactly what we hope for with all our adoptions. Fast Friends has never been “all about the numbers;” we don’t try to push through as many adoptions as possible. We are dedicated to changing lives, one Greyhound at a time, and that means slowing down, taking our time, and really getting to know the dogs in our care. Then we can set them, and their new families, up for success. And if the adoption doesn’t work out, even years later and for whatever reason, we are still here.

All this individualized attention comes at a cost which seems to grow by the day. Prices for food and supplies are skyrocketing, and we are watching every penny. In an uncertain economy and world in turmoil, supporters are trying to help as many good causes as they can. But, please don’t forget about the dogs.

We are thoughtful with the funds that you so generously give, and we won’t compromise on the dogs’ care. The Greyhounds will continue to have overnight staff to keep them safe. They will continue to receive high-quality food and top-notch veterinary care. They will continue to have twice-daily walks, playtime with staff, enrichment toys, and visits with volunteers. And, of course, they will be matched with loving, forever homes.

We believe these dogs deserve quality, loving care, and we refuse to compromise. With your help, we will never have to.
